The Problem

Your Mac is hiding gigabytes of clutter you can't see

macOS has no built-in deep cleaner. Files accumulate silently in hidden system folders, eating your storage without a single notification.

📁

Hidden System Caches

Every app you use — from Safari to Xcode — writes cache data to hidden system folders. These folders grow silently in the background. A freshly-used Mac can accumulate several gigabytes of cache files within weeks, and macOS provides no automated tool to clear them safely.

📄

Duplicate Files Everywhere

Downloaded the same installer twice? Exported a Figma design into multiple folders? Backed up photos manually? Identical files scatter across your drive — occupying double (or triple) the necessary space, with no easy way to find them.

💿

Forgotten DMG Installers

Every app installed from a .dmg disk image leaves that file sitting on your drive after installation. Most users never delete them. A typical .dmg ranges from 100 MB to several gigabytes, and over a few years of installing apps, these forgotten files can consume tens of gigabytes of your storage.

🔨

Developer Tool Bloat

Build tools and package managers each keep their own caches and downloaded data indefinitely. Combined, developer tool caches routinely exceed 20–50 GB — even on machines used only occasionally for development.

Smart Scan

Start cleaning in seconds — for free.

No account required. No license needed. Smart Scan finds and removes junk files, system caches, and logs instantly — always free for every user, forever.

One click. Instant results.

Smart Scan runs eight cleaning modules in parallel using asynchronous execution, sweeping system caches, logs, duplicate files, screenshots, browser caches, DMG files, and more — all at the same time. Results appear as they are found, sorted by size so the biggest space savings are always at the top. No configuration. No setup. Just launch Macly and click Scan.

Modules

11 specialized Mac cleaning modules

Each module targets a specific category of clutter on your Mac. Nothing generic — every module is purpose-built for its task, with clear previews and safe defaults.

🗑️

Junk Files FREE FOREVER

System caches, application logs, and temporary files pile up silently in hidden system folders. Every app you use writes cache data continuously. Macly scans them in seconds and removes files that macOS regenerates automatically — safe to delete every time, with no impact on your apps or data. This is the most impactful single action you can take to free storage on a Mac, and with Macly it is always free.

📄

Duplicate File Finder

Duplicate files accumulate when you download the same installer twice, copy files between folders, or export assets multiple times. Macly identifies true duplicates by comparing file contents — not just names or dates — so only genuinely identical files are flagged. Only files 1 MB or larger are compared, keeping the scan fast and focused on meaningful space savings.

📦

App Uninstaller

Dragging an app to Trash leaves behind a trail of hidden files — preferences, caches, application support data, and launch agents scattered across your system library. Macly's App Uninstaller finds all files associated with every installed application and presents them in a sortable list. Review, select, and remove completely — recovering the storage that a simple drag-to-Trash operation always misses.

📷

Photos & Videos PREVIEW

Your Photos library quietly stores large video files and screenshots that are easy to forget about. Macly scans for videos larger than 100 MB and all screenshot assets stored inside the Photos library. Every result in the list shows a live thumbnail — tap it to open a full-size photo preview or stream the video inline, even if it is stored in iCloud. Review each file before deciding to delete, right from the preview sheet. Because Photos deletions are permanent and cannot be undone, the preview feature is designed to let you be absolutely sure before confirming removal.

✉️

Mail Attachment Cleaner

Apple Mail stores every email attachment you have ever received directly on your disk. After years of using Mail, this hidden folder can grow to tens of gigabytes filled with PDFs, images, videos, and documents from emails you may have read once and forgotten. Macly surfaces the largest attachments for review, so you can reclaim that space in seconds.

💿

DMG File Finder

Every app you download and install from the internet typically arrives as a .dmg disk image. Once the app is installed, the original file sits on your drive indefinitely — most users never delete it. Individual installer images typically range from 100 MB to several gigabytes, and a typical Mac used over a few years can accumulate dozens of them.

🗂️

Trash Emptier

Files moved to Trash continue to occupy storage until the Trash is permanently emptied. It is easy to forget that large files — videos, disk images, old projects — are sitting in Trash consuming gigabytes you could be using elsewhere. Macly shows the full contents of your Trash with individual file sizes and a total summary, letting you review everything before confirming permanent removal.

🔨

Developer Cache Cleaner

Software developers accumulate enormous caches from build tools, package managers, and container platforms. Macly targets the most common sources across JavaScript, Python, Java, Rust, Swift, and Docker workflows. Smart exclusion logic prevents active project dependencies from being flagged, so only genuinely stale cache data is suggested for removal.

📸

Screenshot Cleaner

Screenshots accumulate quickly during day-to-day Mac use — especially when sharing bug reports, creating documentation, or doing screen recordings. Macly finds screenshot files across your entire home folder and lists them by size. Files are moved to Trash, not permanently deleted, so you can recover anything you accidentally select.

🌐

Browser Cache Cleaner

Web browsers cache images, scripts, fonts, and other assets locally to speed up page loads. Over time these caches grow to several gigabytes and are rarely cleared manually. Macly supports Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi, Opera, and more. Note: Safari's cache is managed exclusively by macOS and cannot be cleared by third-party applications.

Smart Scan — Always Free

Smart Scan combines eight modules into a single parallel sweep of your Mac, running each scan simultaneously. Results stream in as they are found — no waiting for all modules to finish before seeing your first item. Every result is sorted by size so the biggest space savings are always visible first. Smart Scan runs without any license, any account, or any configuration, and will continue to be free in every future version of Macly.

🛡️

Malware Scan NEW in 1.3.0

Six-phase security scan built into Macly at no extra cost. Detects browser extension hijacking across Chrome, Edge, Brave, Firefox, and Safari using weighted permission scoring and a known-malicious-ID blacklist. Identifies suspicious LaunchAgents and Daemons, unauthorized MDM configuration profiles (proxy hijack, root CA injection, forced VPN), hosts file tampering, and non-standard DNS resolvers. Dismissed findings are remembered — they don't reappear on the next scan.

Photos & Videos

Preview every photo and video before you delete.

Because Photos deletions are permanent and cannot be undone through Trash, Macly gives you a full-size preview for every item in the results list — photos open instantly, videos stream inline even from iCloud. Review, then decide.

  • 🖼️ Full-size photo preview — opens in a sheet with the file name, size, and selection controls. Results are sorted by file size so the most impactful deletes come first.
  • ▶️ Inline video playback — tap the play button to stream the video directly from your Photos library or from iCloud, without opening the Photos app.
  • Select or deselect from the preview sheet — no need to close the preview and return to the list. One tap marks the file for deletion or removes it from your selection.
  • ⚠️ Photos deletions are permanent. Deleted photos cannot be moved to Trash. Macly makes this clear before you scan and always requires an explicit confirmation before any deletion.

Safety First

Deleted something by mistake? Undo it instantly.

Most Macly modules move files to Trash — not permanent deletion. After every cleanup session, Macly shows a full restore list so you can bring any file back to its original location with a single click.

Moved to Trash — always restorable

These 5 modules use Trash, not permanent delete

  • Mail — email attachments and large downloads from Apple Mail
  • Screenshots — screenshot files found across your home folder
  • DMG Files — disk image installers found across your home folder
  • Dev Caches — build tool caches for JavaScript, Python, Java, Rust, Swift, and Docker
  • Browser Cache — Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Arc, and other browsers

Open Finder → Trash and drag any file back to its original location, or use Macly's built-in per-item Restore button directly from the completion screen right after cleanup.

⚠️

Permanently deleted — clearly labelled

These modules bypass Trash by design or necessity

  • !Junk Files — caches and logs are auto-regenerated by macOS; permanent deletion is always safe
  • !Duplicates — permanently removed; review the list carefully before confirming
  • !Photos & Videos — permanently deleted; cannot be moved to Trash
  • !Trash — already in Trash; this module empties it permanently

Every module that performs permanent deletion displays a caution badge on its detail page before you scan. You always know what you are deleting before you confirm.

Security · New in 1.3.0

Mac security, built right in

Malware Scan runs six detection phases to catch browser hijacking, adware, and unauthorized system changes — no separate app, no extra cost.

🔌

Browser Extension Analysis

Scans Chrome, Edge, Brave, Firefox, and Safari extensions using a weighted danger score: broad host access (+50), webRequest (+30), cookie access (+20). MV3 host_permissions are included. Extensions matching a known-malicious-ID list are flagged as critical regardless of declared permissions.

⚠️

Adware & LaunchAgent Detection

Checks LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons across user and system directories against a 28-pattern adware library and suspicious label prefixes such as com.update.*. Also flags launch agents that use unsigned binaries stored in non-standard locations outside /Applications, /usr, or /bin.

🔒

Configuration Profile Detection

Reads installed MDM and configuration profiles via profiles list. Flags proxy hijacking (com.apple.proxies), root CA injection (com.apple.security.root), and forced VPN profiles (com.apple.vpn.managed) as critical or warning findings with a direct link to System Settings → Profiles to remove them.

🌐

Hosts File & DNS Monitoring

Parses /etc/hosts for entries that redirect monitored domains (Google, Apple, iCloud, GitHub, PayPal and more) to non-localhost IPs — a common malware persistence technique. Separately checks active DNS resolvers via scutil --dns and flags servers that are not public trusted resolvers or RFC 1918 private ranges.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Anything else? Ask on GitHub Discussions

Is Smart Scan really free forever?
Yes — no catch, no expiry, no account. Smart Scan (the Junk Files module) is completely free with no time limit. It targets system caches and logs — the most impactful sources of recoverable disk space on a Mac. We believe every Mac user should be able to clear basic junk for free, which is why Smart Scan is free in every version of Macly, forever.
What does the 7-day free trial include?
The free trial unlocks all 11 cleaning modules — Duplicates, App Uninstaller, Photos, Mail, DMG Files, Trash, Dev Caches, Screenshots, and Browser Cache — for 7 days at no cost and with no credit card required. After the trial expires, Smart Scan remains free and you can purchase a license at any time to restore full access to all modules.
Is Macly safe to use on my Mac?
Macly always shows you exactly what it found — with file names and sizes — before deleting anything. You select what to remove, then confirm. Five modules (Mail, Screenshots, DMG, Dev Caches, Browser Cache) move files to macOS Trash so you can restore anything afterward. Junk Files are permanently deleted because macOS regenerates them automatically — they cannot contain personal data. Photos deletions are permanent, which is why Macly includes a full preview feature for every photo and video before you select it.
Which macOS versions does Macly support?
Macly requires macOS 13 Ventura or later. It is a universal binary that runs natively on Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4) and Intel Macs. macOS 12 Monterey and earlier are not supported.
How does the one-time license work?
After purchasing through Lemon Squeezy, a license key is delivered to your email address. Open Macly, go to Settings, and enter the key — it is stored securely in macOS Keychain, so you only need to enter it once per Mac. A Personal license covers 1 Mac, Family covers up to 3, and Team covers up to 10. There is no subscription, no annual renewal, and no expiry date. All future updates are included at no additional cost.
Why does the Mail module require Full Disk Access?
Apple Mail stores all attachments in a folder that macOS protects through its privacy framework. Full Disk Access is the permission that allows Macly to read this protected area. You grant it once in System Settings, and Macly only reads file names and sizes — it never uploads, transmits, or reads the content of your emails or attachments.
Can I restore files after cleaning?
Yes — for most modules. Mail, Screenshots, DMG Files, Dev Caches, and Browser Cache all move files to macOS Trash rather than permanently deleting them. After every cleanup, Macly displays a restore list on the completion screen with a per-item Restore button and a Restore All button. You can also open Finder → Trash and drag files back manually. Junk Files (caches/logs), Photos, Trash contents, and Duplicates are permanently deleted and cannot be restored.
